I applied with a Japanese company once. I had to pay expenses to travel to a major city for the application, and did pass the intial selection process. I'd love to teach in Japan, but after that experience I wonder if their application process doesn't favor people living in major cities over those who have to travel for each application.

This is an interesting list. If we ESL teachers have to answer the age-old question - should I teach for love or money? - then my choice would be south or central American countries. I'd like to know more about Chile. I've taken a quick look at some on-line resources about Chile, only to find lots of contradictory information. Some blog posters are quite disappointed in both the high cost of living, and in the working conditions. One article was highly politicized, and very doom-and-gloom (mainly because the PM/PRES isn't a right-wing teeth-gnashing US-style conservative.

The opinions I have panned may be those of neophytes: first-time or low-time ESL teachers who brought with them unrealistic expectations of living abroad. Still, I am unsure whether Chile is a good choice at this time.

Would someone recommend some balanced and realistic on-line information sources for me? I would greatly appreciate it. I've taught ESL for seven years - four of those years were outside of my country - and I plan on staying in ESL education for a decade or so until I retire. The Latino cultures of The Americas are very attractive to me: I would teach there for love! But I'm not done with saving up, so I need to answer 'the money' question too!
