Teaching ESL as a Non-Native Speaker

Every year, we have new graduates speaking English as a second language themselves, eager to share
what they’ve learned with those just starting their ESL journey. Although native English speakers are
often preferred for their natural accents, understanding of slang, and ease in conversation, the
experiences of fluent non-native speakers can be very valuable in the classroom.

We have contacts in many Latin American countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and
more, who will consider all proficient English speakers. Some schools may require proof of your
IELTS/TOEFL exam score, or similar qualifications.

Non-native speakers who have enjoyed an English education from a young age will find a number of
opportunities available to them in Asia, including several opportunities in Korea and Japan. Many
companies in China will accept non-native speakers, particularly those with 120+ hours of TESL
certification.

Finally, in Europe, one of our contacts in Russia welcomes applications from qualified non-native
speakers, and non-native EU passport holders are eligible to apply with our contact in Italy.

Our Job Placement Advisors are happy to work with every graduate, regardless of age, education, and
native speaker status, to help you find an ESL teaching opportunity you’ll love.

I have Tefl certificate and master degree in Theological Studies, and looking for a teaching job in China. I don’t have a teaching experience. Is there any schools in China who are hiring teachers without experience ?

There is always a high demand for English teachers in China and schools will consider most candidates who qualify for the Z work visa. To get the work visa to teach English in China one typically needs to have a TESOL certificate of at least 120 hours in length, a bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an English-language university in an English-speaking country, a passport from an English-speaking country, and under 59 years of age. You can find more information about this on the Where You Can Teach pages on our website. Also consider attending one of our Free Information Sessions to learn more.
